Enlightened’s Good-for-You Crisps

Chances are when you think of “health food,” you think of things like kale, chia seeds, chicken (sorry vegans), and broccoli. You probably also don’t inherently think of these foods as being delicious. BUT. What if I told you that there’s a healthy snack food that has an awesome macronutrient profile, is minimally processed, AND tastes delicious?

Enlightened: “The Good-For-You Crisps” are roasted broad beans dusted in a variety of flavors and seasonings. The kind folks at Enlightened provided Ink and Sugar with review samples of both their sweet and savory crisps. I tried the two sweet offerings: Cocoa Dusted and Sweet Cinnamon.

Now, I feel the need to emphasize here that the Sweet Cinnamon flavored crisps are . . . really, really good. Like, way better than I ever would have expected from a health food. The flavor is reminiscent of sweet cinnamon breakfast cereals (think Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cinnamon Life, or whatever the name of that Special K cinnamon cereal is).

The sweetness is not overpowering but is definitely stronger than I would have expected from a “good-for-you” food. The surprise may have also been compounded by the fact that I tried the cinnamon crisps after the Cocoa Dusted ones, which are decidedly less sweet (hence the lack of said adjective in the flavor title). The cocoa flavor is good as well but definitely tastes like more of a health food and less like awesome cereal.


Both flavors have a pretty good nutritional profile. Clocking in at 100 calories per 1 oz. serving each, they contain 2.5 grams of fat, 16 carbs (with 6 of those being fiber), and 7 grams of protein. Serving suggestions on the package include sprinkling the crisps on oatmeal and mixing them into yogurt, both of which I can see as being tasty options, although I just sampled them by the fistful.
