I can’t recall the last time my diet didn’t include at least one protein shake a day. I’ve tried almost every brand of whey protein out there, and I’ve experimented with dozens of ways to make it more palatable, or at least more interesting. I’ve added whey protein to smoothies, blended coffee drinks, baked goods, oatmeal. I’ve made every “protein fluff,” “proyo,” and mug cake known to man. Once–once–I mixed my protein powder with raw egg whites to make “pudding” (I’m still traumatized by that one). I’ve made “Beltsander brownies” in every conceivable flavor.
In spite of all that experimentation and flavor sampling, my absolute favorite protein is TGS Nutrition’s 100% Whey Protein Powder. It’s unflavored, unsweetened, low calorie, low carb, and gluten- and GMO-free. And my favorite way to consume it is straight up, mixed with 8 ounces of water. By itself, in water, it tastes a lot like powdered milk–clean, with no chemical aftertaste. I love that it’s not sweet. Most other protein powders are so sweet, I usually end up cutting them with extra water. But if whey, neat, is not your cup of protein, you can mix it with almond or dairy milk and add any number of flavorings–chocolate syrup, cinnamon, vanilla and other extracts. TGS Nutrition’s Whey Protein is also my favorite for baking. Because it doesn’t use fillers, it doesn’t make the end product gummy or rubbery like many protein powders do. I use this almost exclusively in protein baked goods now, and I love it especially for pancakes and my Cranberry Orange Protein Muffins.
Because this protein dissolves so quickly and completely, I’ve taken it to sprinkling it over my cereal. It might sound weird, but trust me on this–it’s a great way to get a protein bump with your favorite cereal. It dissolves quickly and completely with a gentle stir–no need to shake.
